INFORMATION
This spacious house with spectacular sea views is situated overlooking the harbour and bay at Port of Ness (Port Nis), 28 miles from the principal town Stornoway (Steornabhagh), from where it can be reached by travelling on the A857 towards Barvas (Barabhas), and on to Port Nis near the northern tip of the island. This journey is only 35-40 minutes by car. Continue through the village past the Harbour View guest house on the right, turning left at the next fork in the road. The house is fifty metres ahead overlooking the bay. The widely spread crofting settlement of Ness is made up of a number of villages. Local amenities include a petrol station and well-stocked store at Swainbost. Cros provides a good general store with off-sales, and a public house where meals are available. The area is rich in wildlife, especially sea birds, seals and dolphins. The quality of the salmon and trout fishing and sea angling around the island is justly famous.
Stornoway is an excellent place to shop, being equipped with a Co-op Superstore and a Tesco supermarket. Many other good stores are available in the town. Numerous smaller shops, to buy gifts and items of interest, abound. Several restaurants are worth a visit, including the Balti House and the Thai Café. The community centre has a swimming pool. Tennis courts, bowling greens and other sporting facilities including a golf course can be found in the scenic Lews Castle grounds.
Lewis and Harris are of great attraction to the adventurous visitor, there are many beautiful and varying landscapes to experience, from the craggy coastline, moors and scenic lochs of Lewis, to the majestic hills and golden surf beaches of Harris. The island has sites of archaeological interest such as the Black House at Arnol, the Callanish standing stones and their informative visitor centre. Further information on activities and places of interest can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre, 26 Cromwell Street, Stornoway. Tel: 01851-703088.
